Spring 2023 Ice Skating & Hockey Classes
Class Notes:
- Due to our Spring Ice Show, there will be no classes or practice ice time Monday, May 8 through Saturday, May 13
- Classes may be combined or cancelled at the discretion of management depending on enrollment.
- Make-Up Policy: One make-up class is allowed per session per skater. No make-ups are allowed during the first week of classes or the week of evaluations.
- Class Evaluations: We offer evaluations before the end of each session. Instructors will determine whether a student is ready for evaluation one week prior to testing. Evaluations are optional. Skaters ready to test will be notified by their class instructor or the Figure Skating Supervisor.
- Hockey Class Equipment: The Wilmette Park District requires skaters in Hockey II through Advanced Power classes to wear the following equipment:
- Helmet and face mask
- Elbow pads (recommended)
- Shin pads (recommended)
- Hockey skates
- Stick
- Skating Class Attire/Equipment: Skaters should wear comfortable pants, a warm jacket or shirt, and gloves or mittens. A thick, warm hat or a well-fitted helmet is recommended. Figure skates are recommended for non-hockey classes; a helmet is not required for skaters wearing figure skates. All skaters in hockey skates must wear a helmet and face guard.
- Skate Rental: Skates are available for rent onsite at the Ice Rinks for a discounted rate of $3.75 per class, or for additional savings and convenience, session-long skate rental booklets are also available at the Ice Rinks front office. We have multiple options to choose from, so you can match the number of classes in your session. Coupons are for class use only.

Practice Ice Time
30 minutes of practice ice created for all Learn-to-Skate class levels, from Toddler through Pre-Free Skate. No practice ice: May 8 & 9. Monday or Tuesday afternoons, or Tuesday mornings
ICE SKATING CLASSES
Toddlers begin by learning to fall correctly, and get up alone off the ice before starting on the ice. We focus on balance and self-confidence as we introduce forward skills. Tuesday or Saturday mornings
Students in this class must have completed Toddler 1 and will continue learning to fall correctly and get up alone, off and on the ice. Balance and self-confidence are stressed. Forward skills are introduced. Tuesday or Saturday mornings
Students in this class must have completed Toddler II and will continue to build on the skills learned in the Toddler I and II classes. Tuesday mornings
We introduce beginners with no previous instruction or experience to basic skills including falling, standing, marching and basic gliding. On-ice and off-ice instruction builds confidence. We recommend figure skates for this class; children in hockey skates must wear a hockey helmet with a face guard. Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoons; or Tuesday or Saturday mornings
Skaters should have completed Snowplow Sam 1. Participants will learn basic gliding, moving dips, backward wiggles, forward swizzles, beginning snow plow stop motion, two-foot hop in place. Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoons, or Tuesday or Saturday mornings
Skaters should have completed Snowplow Sam 2. Participants will learn forward skating, forward one-foot glide, forward swizzles, backward two-foot glide, backward swizzles, snowplow stop, two-foot turn in place, and two-foot hop in place. From Snowplow Sam 3, skaters can advance to Basic 2 or Hockey 2. Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoons, or Tuesday or Saturday mornings

Children in hockey skates must wear a hockey helmet with a face guard. Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoons, or Saturday mornings
Skaters learn beginning forward stroking, forward pumps on a circle, forward to backward two foot turns on a circle, backward one foot glides, backward snowplow stop, forward slalom, and forward pivots. Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoons; or Saturday mornings
Skaters learn forward outside and inside edges on a circle, forward crossovers, backward pumps on a circle, backward one-foot glides, beginning two-foot spin, and forward lunges. Monday afternoons or Saturday mornings
Skaters learn backward outside and inside edges on a circle, backward crossovers, forward outside three-turn, advanced two-foot spin, hockey stops, and side toe hops. Monday or Tuesday afternoons
Skaters learn backward crossovers to landing position, backward outside mohawk, forward and backward combinations, one-foot spins, waltz jump, mazurkas, and backward inside pivots. Monday or Tuesday afternoons
Skaters learn forward power stroking, forward outside and inside edges, backward outside three-turns, one foot spin/scratch from crossovers, half flip, toe loop, and a waltz jump waltz jump sequence. Tuesday afternoons
Skaters learn alternating forward outside and inside spirals, backward outside and inside edges, backward inside three turns, beginning back spin, half lutz, salchow, and a spiral variation. Tuesday afternoons
Skaters learn alternating backward crossovers to back outside edges, alternating mohawk/crossover sequence, waltz three-turns, advanced back scratch spin, loop jump, and waltz jump/toe loop or salchow/toe loop combination and a toe step sequence. Tuesday afternoons
Skaters learn forward power three-turns, waltz 8 pattern, forward upright/scratch spin to backward upright/scratch spin, sit spin, 1/2 loop jump, flip jump, and a stag or split jump. Tuesday afternoons
Skaters learn backward outside three-turn mohawk, five-step mohawk sequence, camel spin, waltz jump/loop jump combination, lutz jump, and a loop jump loop jump combination. Tuesday afternoons
Skaters learn forward power pulls, choreographed step sequence, camel-sit spin, layback, attitude spin or cross-foot spin, waltz jump/half loop/salchow jump combination, an axel jump, and backward outside pivots. Skaters above a landed axel will learn double jumps and flying spins. Tuesday afternoons
The adult curriculum is designed for beginner and experienced adult skaters who wish to improve their skating skills. This class promotes physical fitness, and improves balance and coordination while teaching proper technique. Wednesday afternoons

Hockey
Skaters learn introductory skating skills including fall and recovery, proper basic hockey stance, marching, two-foot glides, dips, forward swizzles, double c-cuts, and t-push to a two-foot glide. Saturday mornings

Skaters learn lateral crossover march, forward c-cuts on a circle, forward outside and inside edges, backward c-cuts, backward snowplow stops, one and two foot v-stop, and one-foot moving snowplow stop. Thursday afternoons or Saturday mornings
